Each summer we welcome 3-5 apprentices who will live and work at Newforest during a six month stay. Apprentices learn by doing, participating in all aspects of life at Newforest from starting seed to harvesting and preserving, compost, caring for chickens, cutting and processing firewood, caring for fruit trees, plant propagation and nursery work, season extension, mushroom cultivation, cooking, permaculture design, building and much more. Apprentices receive room (camping space) and board, a $150/month stipend, and share common space with showers, kitchen, etc. Apprentices are encouraged to attend classes and workshops at Newforest and receive free admission to all events. All ages and backgrounds are welcome. The only requirements are a strong desire to learn, work hard, and live in community. Flexibility and a sense of humor are a plus!
Here's what our apprentices have to say about their experience:
Stacy Haught, Permaculture Apprentice, 2011
"I am developing a great appreciation for the importance of organizations like Newforest. By inspiring families, students, neighbors and visitors to understand their connection to their food and environment, we are encouraging healthier, happier communities."
Ashleigh Russell, Permaculture Apprentice, 2011
"I feel like the Newforest apprenticeship program is a unique experience. We not only have the chance to learn what it takes to grow food, but also have the opportunity to experiment within an evolving permaculture system."
